In the beginning of 20th century, the discovery of bituminous sandstones in the South Eastern coastal basin raised the first petroleum interest. The oil and gas exploration with seismic and geological surveys started in 1950’s and from the 1970’s more exploration activities have taken place. At the end of 2022, about 71,000 km of 2D seismic (onshore and offshore) and 92,000 Sq.Km of 3D seismic were acquired (Figure 4).
Over 282 wells were drilled as of July 2022 (figure 5) .
Several oil and gas deposits have been discovered and some fields are currently in a production stage :
Espoir, Baobab, Foxtrot, Marlin, Manta, Mahi, Lion and Panther (figure 6)
The average oil and gas production in the first half of 2022, is estimated at 28 000 bopd for crude oil and 250 mmscfd for natural gas
